The Kouga River winding through the mountains of the Baviaanskloof

Wilderness & 4x4

Baviaanskloof Wilderness

Willowmore to Patensie · Kouga / Baviaans

A long mountain valley between the Baviaanskloof and Kouga ranges, part of the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site and one of the great gravel drives in South Africa.

About Baviaanskloof Wilderness

The kloof runs roughly east–west between Willowmore and Patensie, with the mega-reserve protecting a remarkable overlap of fynbos, thicket, forest and Karoo vegetation in one valley.

The central section is unsurfaced, steep in places and crosses rivers, so a high-clearance vehicle is normally required and a 4x4 is advisable after rain. There is no fuel and very little cellphone signal along the core route, so it needs planning rather than improvising.

What to expect

  • Gravel mountain passes and river crossings through the central section
  • High-clearance vehicle recommended; check road conditions before travelling
  • No fuel and patchy signal inside the kloof — plan the full day
  • Kudu, baboon, buck and exceptional mountain scenery
