A forest cottage at Hogsback in the Amathole mountains

Eastern Cape region

Amathole

The mountain and forest belt inland of East London, taking in Hogsback, Alice, Stutterheim and the old frontier towns along the Amathole range.

Hogsback sits high in indigenous forest with waterfalls and long walks, and is the district's best-known escape. Alice holds the University of Fort Hare, whose alumni list runs through the political history of southern Africa.

The Amathole Hiking Trail crosses this range, and the R63 and R345 link the towns along it in an easy loop from East London.
