The north-eastern corner of the province against the Lesotho border, where the Eastern Cape gets its snow, its trout rivers and its highest passes.

Rhodes, Barkly East and the Naude's Nek pass draw fly-fishers in summer and snow chasers in winter. Tiffindell, on the slopes of Ben Macdhui, has operated as the country's only ski area.

Aliwal North on the Orange River is the district's main town and the crossing point into the Free State.
