The inland district around Komani and Cradock, where the Karoo meets the grassland and the N10 and N6 carry traffic between the coast and the Free State.
Cradock sits on the Great Fish River next to Mountain Zebra National Park, and its restored Victorian street of cottages is one of the Karoo's better-known heritage projects.
Komani (formerly Queenstown) is the commercial centre for a wide farming area, with Cofimvaba, Engcobo and Cala reaching east towards the former Transkei.
